ForeFlight vs ClearProp: An Honest Comparison for VFR Pilots

ForeFlight is a mature, full electronic flight bag for iPad and iPhone, with official charts, weather, NOTAMs, flight plan filing and ADS-B integration, for both VFR and IFR. ClearProp is a much narrower VFR navigation aid for iPhone and Android: you plan a route, take its maps offline, follow checkpoint guidance in flight, and review a logbook draft afterwards. It has no weather, NOTAMs or official charts, and it is not approved by Transport Canada or the FAA. If you want one app that does everything, ForeFlight is the stronger product. ClearProp is for pilots who want a simple, phone-first navigation and logging aid alongside their official sources.

I built ClearProp, so read this with that in mind. Every ForeFlight fact below comes from ForeFlight's own website or support pages, linked inline, as of October 2026. If we couldn't confirm something on an official ForeFlight page, we left it out.

The short version

If you fly IFR or need weather on the map, ForeFlight is the better choice. Full stop. The same goes if you want NOTAMs in the same app as your charts, fly with an ADS-B receiver or an iPad, or want to file flight plans from the cockpit.

ClearProp is worth a look if you fly VFR in Canada or the US, carry an Android phone or an iPhone, and want route planning, offline route maps, checkpoint guidance and a Transport Canada or FAA format logbook draft, with a free plan.

Plenty of pilots will want both, or neither. ClearProp does not replace official charts, the CFS or Chart Supplement, weather briefings or NOTAMs, so you still need those from official sources.

Where ForeFlight is clearly stronger

ForeFlight covers far more of the flight than ClearProp does, and it isn't close.

  • Charts and publications: ForeFlight's United States region includes FAA VFR sectionals, TACs, VFR flyway charts and IFR charts, and its Canada region includes NAV CANADA VNC, VTA, IFR enroute charts, terminal procedures, the CFS, CAP GEN and the Water Aerodrome Supplement (ForeFlight pricing page, as of October 2026). ClearProp shows no official charts at all.
  • Weather: ForeFlight lists NEXRAD radar, satellite, METARs, TAFs, winds aloft and graphical AIRMETs and SIGMETs on its pricing page. ClearProp has no weather.
  • NOTAMs and TFRs: ForeFlight plots TFRs on the map, and its support site says "All Canadian NOTAMs available on the NavCanada website are available in ForeFlight Mobile" (ForeFlight support: Canadian NOTAMs). ClearProp has no NOTAMs.
  • IFR: ForeFlight supports IFR charts, procedures and filing. ClearProp is VFR only.
  • ADS-B and avionics: ForeFlight connects to receivers and avionics from partners including Stratus, Garmin, uAvionix, Dynon and Bad Elf (pricing page). ClearProp does not connect to any ADS-B receiver or avionics.
  • iPad and web: ForeFlight runs on iPad and iPhone, and ForeFlight on the Web is included with any subscription (ForeFlight support: desktop and web). ClearProp is a phone app.
  • Flight plan filing: ForeFlight says it supports "filing intra-Canada and cross-border VFR flight plans between the US and Canada" (pricing page). ClearProp does not file flight plans.
  • Hazard features: synthetic vision, Hazard Advisor and terrain and airspace profile views are listed in ForeFlight's Essential plan and above (pricing page). ClearProp has no terrain or obstacle alerting.

For a Canadian VFR pilot, the first item is the one that matters most. Plan a departure from Springbank (CYBW) and you want the Calgary VTA for the terminal airspace around CYYC, then the VNC for the rest of the trip. ForeFlight's Canada region has both charts. ClearProp has neither.

What ClearProp does

I kept ClearProp deliberately small. It covers one workflow for a VFR flight, from the route to the logbook.

You plan a route from a departure, a destination and your own checkpoints. While you're still online, ClearProp prepares map coverage for that route and tells you when a download is not complete before departure. Offline maps cover Canada, the contiguous United States and Alaska.

In flight it shows course, distance and time to the next checkpoint, plus nearby airport awareness. When you end the flight, ClearProp prefills a logbook draft from the recorded flight in Transport Canada (CAR 401.08) or FAA (14 CFR 61.51) format. You review and edit the draft before you save it.

It is built for iPhone and Android phones (iOS and Android coming soon). Airport and frequency information comes from open and bundled data that may be incomplete or out of date. The full limits are on our aviation disclaimer: ClearProp is a supplemental aid, not a certified EFB or primary navigation source, and it is not approved or certified by Transport Canada, the FAA or any other aviation authority.

Price comparison

ForeFlight prices below are from the ForeFlight pricing page in US dollars, as of October 2026. ClearProp prices are from our pricing page in US dollars, as of October 2026.

ClearProp Pro$9.99/month or $79/yearClearProp pricing

The table leaves out a few things worth knowing.

ForeFlight renamed its plans recently. Its support site puts it as "Basic Plus is now Starter Pro Plus is now Essential Performance Plus is now Premium", and says "the pricing and included features remain exactly the same" (ForeFlight support: plan names, as of October 2026). So if an older guide or a flight school tells you to buy Pro Plus, that's Essential now.

There is no monthly option. ForeFlight Mobile is sold as one-year plans; "Monthly subscriptions are not offered" (ForeFlight support: subscription terms, as of October 2026). You can try it first: ForeFlight offers a 30-day free trial with Premium features, though filing flight plans is not available during the trial (ForeFlight support: free trial, as of October 2026). After the trial, "An active subscription is required" (ForeFlight support, as of October 2026).

A ForeFlight subscription includes one geographic region (pricing page, as of October 2026). If you fly both sides of the border, read the Canadian data section below before you pick a plan. ForeFlight's pricing page can also show Canadian dollars; check it directly for current CAD prices.

ClearProp's free plan includes: moving map navigation; automatic flight logging; logbook of your last 90 days; older flights kept safe, never deleted; and export your data anytime. Pro adds your full flight history and AI procedure drafting from charts and documents. Every new account starts with 14 days of Pro, free.

ForeFlight's support site says "ForeFlight Mobile is only available on Apple iOS devices such as the iPad or iPhone" and "There are no plans for an Android version of ForeFlight Mobile" (ForeFlight support: Android, as of October 2026). If your only device is an Android phone, that settles it. One ForeFlight subscription covers "2 iPads and 1 iPhone, or 1 iPad and 2 iPhones" (pricing page).

Offline maps

Both apps need you to download before you fly without a connection, and the time to find out a download didn't finish is at home on Wi-Fi, not at the hold short line.

ForeFlight's support site says "Charts, procedures, and diagrams must be set up and downloaded for offline use" (ForeFlight support: offline use). Its Pack feature "makes sure you have the charts, NOTAMs, weather, fuel prices, and airport information you need" (ForeFlight Mobile), and ForeFlight notes that "Weather imagery can't be viewed when offline" (ForeFlight support).

ClearProp downloads map coverage for the planned route, not whole charts. Coverage is Canada, the contiguous United States and Alaska. There are no charts, weather or NOTAMs to take offline, because ClearProp does not have them.

Canadian data

This is where the difference is largest for Canadian pilots.

ForeFlight offers a Canada region with NAV CANADA VNCs, VTAs, the CFS and IFR products (pricing page). The catch is the region model. ForeFlight's support site says a United States subscription "does not include Canadian VNC (VFR) charts", and that you add Canada as a second geographic region for them (ForeFlight support: Canadian charts, as of October 2026). It also notes that "ADS-B weather data is only available for U.S. territory and does not cover Canadian airspace" (ForeFlight support: ADS-B in Canada), so a receiver that shows you weather south of the border won't do the same over Alberta.

ClearProp includes no NAV CANADA data: no VNC, VTA, CFS, airspace or NOTAMs. Canadian airports and frequencies come from open and bundled data, so you must check them against the current CFS. That includes the MF or ATF for every aerodrome you might use. Our guide to planning a VFR cross-country in Canada lists the official sources you still need.

Logbook

ForeFlight has a digital logbook that tracks hours, currency, certificates and endorsements (pricing page). Canadian pilots should note one line from its support site: the "Currency and Rating Progress Reports are based on FAA regulations" and are "not tailored to Canadian standards" (ForeFlight support: logbook in Canada, as of October 2026). Check your Canadian recency against the CARs yourself.

ClearProp creates a logbook draft from each recorded flight, in Transport Canada or FAA format, which you review and edit before saving. On the free plan your logbook shows your last 90 days; older flights are kept, and Pro shows your full history.

Who each app suits

ForeFlight suits instrument pilots, pilots who fly with an iPad and an ADS-B receiver, anyone who wants charts, weather, NOTAMs and filing in a single app, and pilots who need its hazard and performance tools.

ClearProp suits VFR pilots in Canada and the US who fly with a phone, especially on Android, who want a simple route-to-logbook workflow, and who already get their charts, weather and NOTAMs from official sources. If you're looking at other no-cost options too, see our survey of free ForeFlight alternatives for VFR pilots.

Whichever you use, neither app replaces your preflight planning, current official charts and publications, or your judgment as pilot in command.
